THE BEAUTIFUL GAME WILL SURVIVE RACISM – FRAUD – VIOLENCE AND ALEX FERGUSON.

Liverpool V Manchester United Race Row. The losers in this horrible episode are the football fans. People will argue about who was right and who was wrong for a long time and the bad feeling which already existed between these two clubs will only get worse.

By far the worst result of this is that the most nasty, venomous bully in the history of the game has managed to position himself at the top of the moral high ground and the obsequious FA and sporting press are afraid to tackle him, and not for the first time. Ferguson would use anything and I mean anything to gain an advantage and in this case he sees an opportunity to do down Liverpool, the racist backdrop means nothing to him, nothing does.

Had Alex Ferguson taken up golf or athletics as a youth the beautiful game would today be far more able to hold its head high, his influence on the game particularly as the manager of one of the world's richest and most powerful clubs has been unremittingly ugly and sinister. The guy who watched and learned from him while at Chelsea Mourihno is following his example and traducing the reputation of a similarly great club. .

Thankfully the influence of Ferguson on football is drawing to a close, old age will eventually succeed in doing what the authorities have been too spineless to do for a long time and confine him to the dustbin of history. Manchester United might then once again become one of the world's best loved football clubs instead one of its most loathed. It is to be hoped that this great football club will be able to erase the malicious Ferguson influence which has polluted Old Trafford and the English game for too many years. This is the "beautiful game" and no amount of malcontents like Ferguson will ever change that. Now would be an appropriate time to create an award for the most cynical person in sport and award it to Ferguson in perpetuity.

Councillor, Heaven forfend I should read more into your comments than you intend, but are you not a Celtic supporter and didn't Sir Alex, the most succesful manager in the country, play for Rangers?

Who cares? I stand in opposition to my learned cousin's "Beautiful Game" title, with all the phony diving it's more like 22 man “perfeshunal rasslin".
Gimme a break 0 to 0 game is like Jazz, variations on a theme, BORING.
A game where you can only score with a goal, no alternative ways of scoring points? You kick the ball over the crossbar you get nuttin?
Let's compare, other games where only a goal counts:
Field Hockey (hold me back), hand ball (oh yea), Lacrosse (wow) Ice Hockey (F the goal let's replay the fights) Polo ( did my horse shit on your majesties horsey), Water Polo (need I say more)
Games with secondary scoring:
Australian Rules Football (you'll be Ok mate), Gaelic Football and Hurling (HELLO), Basketball (In the Ghetto), American and Canadian Football (where men are men), Arena Football, Rugby League and Rugby Union (the gentlemen's game)
Around here, kids start playing soccer at about 3 years old, but eventually they grow up and get involved in sports instead.
I love the Celtic but imagine if Brother Walfrid had got them into American Football, Paradise would be twice the size of camp-nou-barcelona.

“0 to 0” can be a great game to you and me, the yanks don’t have the patience to watch sport unless something is happening on the board every couple of seconds” - My uncle Arthur Kelly from Chicago in a conversation held years ago in a Paisley pub with half a dozen? Of his Paisley Kelly nephews. .

“You kick the ball over the crossbar you get nuttin?” because you deserve nuttin, any clown can kick the ball over! The bar. “American and Canadian Football (where men are men),” with the honourable exception of boxing professional football is the toughest sport in the world. “Brother Walfrid had got them into American Football, Paradise would be twice the size of camp-nou-barcelona” But it would not be the beautiful game would it? Baseball is and deserves to be the national sport of America. The others contrive to create bogus excitement usually associated with violence and big big money.

He disgraced himself playing for several teams and I tend to think of him as the richest manager of the richest team in the country rather than the best, but I get the impression that you are trying to make some kind of point. Remember Alex and I are staunch political comrades.

"Violence and big money" in American Football? isn't that what your Sir Alex piece was about? Beauty MUST be in the eye of the beholder, you go to a sports event to be patient, I've seen you. Last week you were singing the praises of Lawrence Tynes a Tim born in Scotland, so he did NUTTIN when he won the Super Bowl by kicking a very oddly shaped ball over the crossbar inti the wind with 11 very big, very fast men trying to stop him. Celtic to me is a symbol of "Downtrodden Man", Brother Walfrid did not care what game his flock played, a "Team Ba" was cheaper than cricket bats and pads. All he wanted was to get the Bhoys off the streets.
Hey Byeck, if the Celtic played American Fitba Willie Fernie may have beat the Rangers 47 to zip, hail hail. Sir Alex's comment after the no hand shake event was a grandstanding at it's worse. If I don't want to I won't shake any ones hand, it would not have amounted to a fig if not for 24 hour news.

My piece was about Sir Alex’s success how he maintains it and the influence he has on the game. Lawrence Tynes came in for a lot of praise here because of his background not his ability to kick an American football.

I agree about the handshakes, it’s not a real handshake if you are ordered to do it, it’s an empty gesture, at the end of a game players are at liberty to either shake an opponent’s hand or not that is much more honest.

Trying to kick a ball into! the net past a goalkeeper at a much smaller target while being attacked by 6ft. 3” 15 stone defenders without the protection of head gear, body armour and light aluminium girdles is a lot more dangerous.

We are not the 'Great Unwashed" over here.
Having had the benefit of growing up with Fitba in Scotland, playing a little and as a fan, then moving to US and seeing something else gives me another look. Americans do not like games that can be decided by a referee giving a penalty based on his/her limited observation. Mistakes are rampant, reference Ballotelli head kick missed by the official or biased officials etc, the referees have power beyond their abilities.
You like baseball, that game cannot end in a draw, there are no time limits and must be played to a conclusion. Baseball is not "The great American Passtime" anymore because of greed, players and owners. The baseball strike in 1994/5 and there were more strikes before that set the game back and it has never recovered. To keep enough teams solvent and competitive the leagues must have shared profits with the bigger clubs, Socialist? The players did not care about the fans, I have a years full of unused White Sox season tickets complete with parking and lunch vouchers, worthless. That was the last time I paid to see a ball game, f--- them.
Sports here a fabulous and varied, so is Wayne Rooney scoring with a scissor kick or Messi's dribble. Fitba is just a game, not the greatest game, just a game. It was invented by man not God and man can make it better, cmon 5 points for a strike outside 30 yards and less if closer, time outs to get more commercials on TV, clubs get more money=better players.

Off topic but I thought both you and your cousin would be interested in this:

"A former Chicago alderman turned political science professor/corruption fighter has found that Chicago is the most corrupt city in the country.

He cites data from the U.S. Department of Justice to prove his case. And, he says, Illinois is third-most corrupt state in the country."

I suppose, coming from 'Glasgie' it must seem like home from home!

CHICAGO - Carl Sandburg.

HOG Butcher for the World,
Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat,
Player with Railroads and the Nation's Freight Handler;
Stormy, husky, brawling,
City of the Big Shoulders:

They tell me you are wicked and I believe them, for I have seen your painted women under the gas lamps luring the farm boys.

And they tell me you are crooked and I answer: Yes, it is true I have seen the gunman kill and go free to kill again.

And they tell me you are brutal and my reply is: On the faces of women and children I have seen the marks of wanton hunger.

And having answered so I turn once more to those who sneer at this my city, and I give them back the sneer and say to them:

Come and show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning.

Flinging magnetic curses amid the toil of piling job on job, here is a tall bold slugger set vivid against the little soft cities;

Fierce as a dog with tongue lapping for action, cunning as a savage pitted against the wilderness,
Bareheaded,
Shoveling,
Wrecking,
Planning,
Building, breaking, rebuilding,

Under the smoke, dust all over his mouth, laughing with white teeth,

Under the terrible burden of destiny laughing as a young man laughs,
Laughing even as an ignorant fighter laughs who has never lost a battle,

Bragging and laughing that under his wrist is the pulse.and under his ribs the heart of the people,
Laughing!

Laughing the stormy, husky, brawling laughter of Youth, half-naked, sweating, proud to be Hog
Butcher, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads and Freight Handler to the Nation.

Mr. Duff, some cities make the heart beat faster, they make you glad to share their honest gut felt humanity. Their defiance; their F**k you honesty; you could never understand. If you were to land in Chicago you would crawl in to a corner and whimper.

I don’t feel as if I need to move anywhere to experience something different. Mistakes are made in every sport but I hope I never hear a kid here say something similar to “say it ain’t so Joe” I think Baseball is very skilful and I learned a lot more about it when you were here, I enjoy it even more now.
“Fitba is just a game, not the greatest game, just a game. It was invented by man not God and man can make it better, cmon 5 points for a strike outside 30 yards and less if closer”

I can’t bring myself to comment on this, it is nothing short of f****n blasphemous, I’m going to lie down in a dark room.
