JUST AN ORDINARY OLD SCOTTISH COPPER STILL PATROLLING HIS BEAT AROUND ETC.

The SNP are still dissembling and struggling to admit that they are unable to recruit 1,000 new police officers, Alex Salmond clearly thinks if the Scottish electorate is dense enough to fall for "Alex Salmond for first Minister" there's nae chance of them spotting this wheeze is there ?

Last week, in response to a Parliamentary Question, erstwhile drunken football casual, Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said: "The Scottish Government has not set a numerical target for the number of police officers that forces should employ." technically correct but, hold on Kenny boy sober up there, the SNP did before the election, remember ? Yesterday, ex friend of the 'king over the water' Jim Sillars, SNP MSP Alex Neil said officers who did not retire after 30 years could now be counted as 'new' officers, (don't panic Pikey, don't panic)

This comes despite the fact the SNP will soon have a budget of £30 billion to spend, more than double what Donald Dewar had available. The SNP made cynical promises before the election they knew they could not keep, remember the 'Alex for first minister' carry on, they have complete contempt for the Scottish people.

The SNP fail over their pledges, Their broken promises continue to be exposed, meanwhile we can look forward to the following, --- emergency caller, ---" we need the police" --- police reception ---"why" ---"a disturbance" ---"how big" --- "what" --- "can we send PC's Sandy n Andy they are retreads but in reasonable nick, Andy's got all his own teeth and Sandy has just had a new pace maker fitted, now now sir there's no need for bad language"

It really does not matter how many police the SNP recruit. The central targets and paperwork the police currently "enjoy" ensure that 60% of each officer's time is spent filling in forms. Put it this way, if an officer starts their shift and immediately makes an arrest they spend the rest of the shift filling in forms and chasing up witnesses, indeed in some cases they then go into overtime. All this and crime is not going down.

Please go and read "Wasting Police Time" for a frontline view.

Second, Kenny may have indeed found himself in the cells for being drunk at the footie (really, he must have felt the urge to be drunk to make the game entertaining), but he has never been sent to jail for attempting to burn down a hotel.

Third, There was a time when during the full council meeting in Renfrewshire (you know, the one you did not attend because you are stabbing your leader in the back) all Paisley officers used to remain in the station. This was because our example of democracy used to regularly descend into boxing.

Should the SNP honour their commitment to more police? Yes, if it was in their manifesto.

Now Terry, are you going to write to Gordon to ask for a referendum on the EU constitution?

Terry,
You DID miss that meeting. If you're suffering a bout of amnesia check with any member of staff or one of your fellow councillors.

As for the reasons why, they're very well known round these parts and you know it.

The reason the police are so busy is due to the amount of neds created by the labour party when they were in power.
Why single out Kenny Mac Askill what about your very own Mr West end seldom sober kid. I am not ugly enough to mention names, however cops at a meeting in Paisley's west end between traders and cooncillor Mr G noted his condition, pished!
I thought I would drop in for a look at your site to see if it had improved since bendy wendy has become boss of bosses. No chance!!
You and your lot caused this trouble in Paisley and people know it.
I see your partner in crime manser came out from under his stone to try and con his way out of lying. Nope he didnt manage, I am so looking forward to the next episode. He may be clever enough to con the people of gallowhill for too many years but he has no chance against the legal profession.

Terry,

You weep and wail about the Apex centre but you are not giving people the full story.

1. The centre is virtually unused.

2. The centre has been allowed to deteriorate during the Labour rule in Renfrewshire that it is now not financially viable to repair, sustain and upkeep.

3. The areas that you weep and wail about have had extremely high levels of investment (to no avail of their problems) during the Labour administration. In fact the facilities in Feguslie are better than anywhere else in Renfrewshire.
Why is the Apex centre need when you have Ferguslie Sports Centre?

So instead of trying to make a petty political goal scoring point, why don't you just stick to the reality and the truth.

I personally feel that the financial investment in these areas has been an exercise in box ticking by the previous administration instead of a real effort to cure the deep rooted problems that they have.
It is about time that some other areas started to benefit in some way from the exorbitant level of council tax that Labour have managed to tally over the the last 10 years.

I for one am delighted to see some investment in other areas, and I think that the new administration are to be commended for this instead of throwing money at facilities in so called deprived areas where the investments are at best unused and most of the time abused

Anonymous said...

Why do you need 2 Sports Centres in Ferguslie Terry?

Surely this duplication is a waste of taxpayers money. How many other areas have 2 council sports centres on their doorstep?

I know that you would gladly spend all of the council's budget in Ferguslie and Shortroods but isn't it high time that other parts of Renfrewshire are looked after with some investment. It seems that the new council are starting to do that.

The Apex Centre which has been replaced as a place to hold meetings by the Tannahill Centre?
The Apex Centre which has been replaced as a sports and leisure facility by the Ferguslie Park Sports Centre just down the road?
The Apex Centre which has not been fully utilised for the best part of 2 decades?

That Apex Centre?

Nice to see you still don't have a political line to follow - the Apex centre can be renovated at a cost of £600,000 while approx. £10,000,000 is being spent in Ralston and Erskine - did you work as a manual worker in Ferguslie ?

Anonymous said...

'Labour will fight to keep the Apex Centre.'

Is this just you and Cllr Williams or is your leader, Cllr Mcmillan and the rest of the Labour group involved?

Anonymous said...

The question is:

Why should any money be spent on an unused building (near enough) whose functions are performed by other facilities in the area?

I suppose you could ask why those new facilities were built in the first place, when the Apex was there to begin with?

***did you work as a manual worker in Ferguslie ?***
Nope

Anonymous said...

Mr Kelly
Your 2 fellow Councillors Tommy Williams and Mark McMillan were happy to pose in Ralston prior to the election to get votes but now you are as sick as a parrot that the new administration are investing in facilities outwith Ferguslie Park . The truth is Ferguslie Park has first class facilities - Tannahill Centre, Ferguslie Sports Centre,Ferguslie Community Nursery Glen Coats Primary..... The Apex Centre is not well used and your party did nothing while in administration to do anything about the state of the building. Are you worried people will finally see how shortsighted you really are!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Terry,

I cannot see any answer from you to the question as to why Ferguslie needs 2 Sports Centres.

Why spend £600,000 to repair this facility when it is virtually unused and unneeded?

Haven't all the other groups using the centre been transferred to Ferguslie Sports Centre?

Why didn't Labour spend the money to upgrade and repair the centre when they were in power instead of letting it rot?

It is clear that you are not interested (and never have been) in the Apex Centre and that you are only trying to blame the new administration for your shortcomings during the time that you were in power.

Anonymous said...

Why is ther a need to have two Sports centre in Ferguslie.

Is it in case there is a big queue at one then you can mosey on down to the other?

Or is it just more council wastage.

'Did you work as a manual worker in Ferguslie,' raises two questions: How many of your constituents are in employment and how many of them want to be in employment.

Before you start screaming 'ignorant bigotted oppressor of the workers,' I ran a JobClub for four years and kicked off more than a few who took the view 'Why should I work for £100pw when I can get £90 for sitting on my ass.'

And again, before you start screaming, I lost my own job at fiftysix after thirty years service and got up off MY ass to find another (at a lot less money) because I wanted to work.

The Apex is not matched by other facilities - the new facilities are used by people from all over, the problem we have is getting access for Ferguslie kids who can't afford to use it.

I guessed you didn't work as a manual worker in Ferguslie, I can't quite put my finger on why.

Cllr Terry Kelly said...

(buddie) 14/11/07 - You seem to be a bit mixed up here, I don't object to any area getting good facilities I think it should be possible for Ferguslie to get a sum ( now quoted as £400,000 ) when approx. £10,000,000 is being spent elsewhere that looks like bias.
You are right about one thing the new administration will invest in facilities outside Ferguslie sure enough, they will instinctively punish the weakest and the poorest, that's typical of the SNP.

Cllr Terry Kelly said...

(AL) 09:27 - The figure to repair according to the latest is £400,000 and £10,000,000 is being spent elsewhere. The new sports centre caters only for soccer, the Apex catered for soccer, net ball, basket ball, badminton, tennis, judo, martial arts etc. as well as meeting rooms and other projects, clubs etc.

The centre was closed pending an assessment of repairs which we would have done the SNP are happy to close it along with other facilities in Ferguslie out of spite

***I think it should be possible for Ferguslie to get a sum ( now quoted as £400,000 ) when approx. £10,000,000 is being spent elsewhere that looks like bias***

A bit like the bias perceived by the rest of Paisley when over the past few decades Ferguslie Park was at the front of the queue for any money going:
1972-77 subject of community development project
1979 - deemed an area for "priority treatment"
1980 - initiation of various community business intiatives
1984-88 - Ferguslie Park area initiative along with a raft of Renfrew District Council housing programmes.
1988 - New Life for Urban Scotland pumped tens of millions into the area, demolishing, refurbishing and placing the community's involvement at its heart for more than a decade
Since 1999, there has been urban programme funding, social inclusion partnership funding, community regeneration funding and mainstream investment.
Some sources claim close to half a billion pounds may have been spent on Ferguslie's regeneration.

If accurate, that would have been enough to turn every one of the 13,500 residents into multi- millionaires!

Compare this to money spent on other "deprived" areas of Paisley over the same timeframe and see how cries of "bias" stack up?

As of October 2006, £22 million was earmarked for community regeneration over the next three years. This predates the current council administration, so obviously the previous incumbents weren't too interested in fixing up the Apex either, given that had a bit more £10mil available.

***I've heard this collection of anti Ferguslie prejudices many times before, I believe in helping those who need it most***

***Perhaps if all this largesse has been dispensed in Ferguslie you might want to live there***

Okay another one of those yes/no, either/or questions you seem to hate answering:

Either
Ferguslie Park is a wonderful place to live and bring up children with no more social problems than any other area in Paisley and thus no more needful or deserving of public finance and regeneration money than any other area.
Or
Ferguslie Park is still an area which suffers social issues and problems to a greater scale than the rest of Paisley and is still in greater need of urban, social and economic regeneration.

If the former is true, then surely it is the turn of other Wards with Renfrewshire to benefit for the "largesse" bestowed on Ferguslie?

If the latter is true, one has to ask what has happened to all the money poured into Ferguslie Park over the last 35 years?! Has it been poured down a drain?
The last three and a half decades have seen three Conservative Prime Ministers, four Labour Prime Ministers, three Labour First Ministers and now an SNP First Minister, so there has been a broad spectrum of political influence during this time.
If three and a half decades of social and economic development have not been enough to improve the lot of Ferguslie Park residents, what will be?

Cllr Terry Kelly said...

Okay, let's shoot your paranoia down so you answer the question honestly.

Let's ignore the Scottish First Ministers, all the Urban funding was originally implemented by Westminster. Further more, let's ignore the number of PM's invovled.

In terms of years, since 1972 when social development money began pouring into Ferguslie Park there have been 20 years of Conservative government and 15 years of Labour government - so no-one can claim Labour is more to blame.

Given a nearly equal amount of political influence from the left and the right, why does Ferguslie Park still need money poured into it after nearly £0.5Billion over three and a half decades?

Anonymous said...

How would I force the able bodied idle back to work? Simple, I'd import some of Stalin's better ideas.

Firstly, I'd take away their passports. No more foreign holidays at my expense.

Secondly, I'd make their benefits conditional on reporting to the DHSS at 8am on a daily basis. No more staying in bed at my expense.

Thirdly, if they really are terminally unemployable, I'd make them Councillors.
