RENFREWSHIRE SNP's RUNNING TOTAL

Here's the SNP record already - is it any wonder they are back in bed with the Tories in Holyrood. What did they sell to get the Tories to save their budget ?
Think Trump, Think Aviemore, Think Souter.

Savage cuts in warden services to elderly.

Closure of Nurseries in poorest areas.

Closure of Sports Centre in poorest area.

Cuts in out of school learning.

And the latest from your CARING SHARING SNP ADMINISTRATION.

The closure of the Digital Inclusion Project this was set up under Labour to provide free access to computers and internet access to the less well off in our society.

The unemployed, the elderly, the disabled and those with special needs will suffer which is becoming all too typical of the SNP.

Three full time and eight part time staff will lose their jobs.
The SNP have of course refused to honour Labour's gaurantee of no compulsory redundancies while Alex (the spiv) Salmond is busy trumpeting that his Govt. will close and amalgamate Govt. bodies and promises, and, yes you've guessed it he says "we will do this wihout compulsory redundancies"

Is it not about time that the SNP fearthearts in Renfrewshire started talking to Alex (the spiv)

There will be more of this to come.

YAAAWWNN.

That wouldn't be the same tories that Wendy is sharing the overnight sleeper down to London with, would it Terry?

is that the time already? and only two closures today, they are slacking on the job.

They also failed to support the invasion of Iraq -a disgrace for which they should be drummed out of politics.

The SNP are as bad in Glasgow. They're behind the 'Go Ape' development in Pollok Park there. If you don't know about this it's a treetop adventure playpark that costs £25 per person to access and is being placed in the Pollokshaws end of the park (one of the Southside's poorest bits).

The land was given to all the people of Glasgow by the Maxwell family years ago. They intended it to be freely accessed by all not those that can afford £25 admission.

Now there are some Labour councillors backing this but it's an SNP plan.

When will the fainthearts that they're willing to privatise things that even Thatcher would have thougt were sacred. Pollok Park is the peoples property.

I'm not proud of it but until last week I was an SNP activist. I was mainly involved in researching policy It came to my attention that I and others were being asked to research along lines that would fit the policy rather than drawing policy from the evidence.

Worst of all the policy they intend to subject us to later in the makes the tories look like the SWP.

Believe me in five years time none of you will remember trumpgate because it will be dwarfed by whats too come.

Given the propensity for Enron-style budgeting of the previous Scottish administration, is it any wonder that the SNP find themselves without the necessary funds to fulfil the promise of free care for the aged?

I note you do not criticise that, Councillor.

Anonymous said...

Can you provide the usage figures for the scheme to be cut? Is there a consultation document?

Before we rush to condemn the SNP we first need to know what the figures are.

What were the projected usage numbers?

What are the actual numbers?

Cost per user - projected?
Cost per user - actual?

Demographic breakdown of users with reference to target demographics?

Usage statistics (i.e. was it used to access online government services or Bebo)?

These should be what decides the fate of the project, not political concerns.

The Incorrigible Plagiarist said...

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but don't the libraries of Renfrewshire provide free internet access to everyone?

The Incorrigible Plagiarist said...

Think Aviemore...

Is this the story about the director of SEPA raising a planning objection to the Aviemore development 6 years late.

The same director who allegedly donated another one of those £995s to Wendy Alexander's leadership campaign?

The story where the govt responded to a letter from all parties, including Labour, urging them to resolve the impasse between the developers and the planners - which they duly did, to the satisfaction of all concerned.

Unusual of you to highlight such a positive SNP story .

The project had achieved what it was set out to do and was only ever to be short term. You need to look at making projects sustainable something labour have failed to do over their many years in power. Yes the vulnerable need to be supported but in the right way. I'm told a lot of the computers are now in Cash Converters!!!!

If you want this information go and find it. I have had several constituents contact me and ask if it can be saved.

We are seeing an SNP pattern emerge here it’s ‘hammer the poor’ and give the Tories what they want to save our budget. Do you still think that a vote seeking tax freeze doesn’t cost anything. Do you still not see the con ?

To wee Alex (the spiv) you are just another ‘mark’

But didn't the community planning partnership refuse to extend the funding to DIP - this included the council, the health board, local enterprise company, and local members of the community!! Shouldn't we be asking whats happening to the computers? Do all residents still have them or have they sold off public property?

Of course constituents can ask that you save a particular project but the question remains about value-for-money of the scheme.

We are reminded that the last time you got on your high horse about the "SNP cuts" it turned out that the Apex centre was starved of proper funding under Labour who recognised it was under used but were too cowardly to do anything about it when they held the leavers of power.

So rather than specifics can you tell me if (in your opinion) it represents value for money (ignoring the fact that only the Labour party in this country seems to see the value in providing internet access under the banner of "digital poverty").

I think that your last point to me indicated that you think the only criteria for keeping a public project running is if there is money to fund it. This is of course a very irresponsible attitude.

Anonymous said...

The harsh fact is that we can't continue to support 55% public sector employment.

Anonymous said...

There are no figures for the project it was an embarassment, some fegs were given free computers and internet access and after one years training they wanted more -but the reality was that half of them had sold the computers...an audit of the project would discover this!

Anonymous said...

Fair enough I suppose. So let me ask it another way. Do you have or have seen the usage stats? And do they support your argument?

Is the project (in your opinion) at, or approaching, capacity or over-subscribed?

Is this the basis for your opposition to the cutback?

Cllr Terry Kelly said...

(Anonymous) 02/02/08 - wriggle as much as you want this is more SNP cuts, and there’s a lot more to come.

(ShrekBall) 04/02/08 - “the Apex centre was starved of proper funding under Labour “
Untrue, the Apex was closed for repair and the SNP refused to spend £400,000 to fix it while spending £7.5 million in Ralston for sports, another SNP attack on the poor.

This is a good and worthwhile project which helps those who would not be able to afford computing, that makes them an SNP target.

Cllr Terry Kelly said...

(ShrekBall) 09:06

My opposition to the cut is because it is a good project which provides help where it is needed. It has nothing to do with stats.

Anonymous said...

Without wanting to go over the past the Apex centre needed 400,000 when Labour were in power but they refused to spend it. the SNP were told that it would now take a lot more to renovate it after years of neglect and given that a single group use it (for free) and there are alternative facilities it does not make financial sense. The taxpayer should get value for money.

How does having access to the Internet help the poor exactly?

Anonymous said...

What help does it provide exactly?

Cllr Terry Kelly said...

(ShrekBall) 16:43 -

Terry says "another attack on the poor" correct me if I am wrong but is there not another sports centre in Ferguslie Park, astroturf football pitch, gym, community room, lots of activities for local people and a fantastic project called FIT for Ferguslie. Is the Council not supporting this centre and it's activities ?? Do you think Ferguslie Park should have more facilities than anywhere else Terry or should we rationalise the facilities in the area and ensure that they are first class and offer a wide range of activities. As for £7.5 million for Ralston, how much did the labour adminisration spend in Ralston in the last 27 years and how much in Ferguslie Park? Young people in Ralston are entitled to access to first class sports facilities just the same as the young people of Ferguslie Park.

Shrekball asked: "How does having access to the Internet help the poor exactly?"

Shrekball, it means that the poor can look at pictures of naked ladies (who only pose naked because they are thick) for free instead of having to spend their hard earned benefit money on Readers Wives.

And provides socialists with the means to post complete drivel to their blog sites without stinking up the public library.

Anonymous said...

I use it every day. But it does not enhance my personal life. I do not access training online (I find it tedious and prefer classroom instructor led to be more beneficial), I do not read books online (preferring to use Amazon to deliver books to my door - but I have Waterstones round the corner), I do not access "government services" online, especially as we now know they cannot be trusted with my credit card details. I read the news sites but I can also read a newspaper.

In short I cannot think of a single case where having access to the internet will improve my personal wealth and I cannot forsee a situation where access to the web or email will help someone break the poverty line.

In what way has internet access improved your personal circumstances?

I am not a Nationalist. I am a computer programmer with a healthy distrust of computers. Computers are not a magic bullet to poverty and it has been a 10 year mystery to those of us in the industry the government's complete faith in solving "digital poverty".

Anonymous said...

Terry,

Your opinion of spending in other areas other than Ferguslie only shows you up for the horrendous bigot that you are. You and people like you are the reason that Ferguslie and other areas like it are so hard to change.

I come from Howwood Road Scheme in Johnstone and my best mate comes from Ferguslie.

I now live in Ralston and he lives in a nice part in Paisley.

We both worked hard and refused to live off of government handouts.
There is an attitude of a lot of people in these areas (not everyone) that the world owes them a living and that they are automatically entitled to handouts without making any effort.
I know this for a fact as I lived among it for over 20 years.
People like you try to perpetuate this philosophy instead of trying to encourage people to have some respect for themselves and to do something with their lives.

I have never been against providing for people that are less fortunate but giving away free computers to people and for them to sell off in order that they can go down the pub and the bookies makes no sense.

You can argue all you want that this is not the case but I have seen this at first hand.

The Ralston area has next to no investment over the last 25 years whilst Ferguslie has had money thrown at it continually.

A lot people in our area are now younger couples from mixed backgrounds who have chosen to spend what they have earned to live in an area where they hope that there children will have better opportunities than they have had.

You would be happy for the council to pour its whole budget into Ferguslie regardless of its needs

Cllr Terry Kelly said...

(ShrekBall) 10:21 -

You and ‘serpico’ deserve each other he will teach you a whole new vocabulary.
You will need a strong nerve though, he can be quite scary.

I think that computers/web site/ internet are a great advantage to anyone who can access them even the poor that you despise so much, you don’t and I’m delighted to leave it at that, anyone who reads this can make up their own mind.

Cllr Terry Kelly said...

Anonymous said...

I don't despise the poor, I simply value the websites contribution to society differently. I am sorry that you feel the only way to defend this position is to set up a straw man here.

But you have failed to give a single site that can help people out of poverty. You are certainly citing a vague "feeling" about the technology in general but your lack of suggesting even a single particular site as worthy enough to help people up simply shows that the argument is not there.

Just one site? Surely if you are so confident in this program you can name a single site?

I am touched by your concern for whom I associate with. I do not doubt that as English is his second language that Serpico can indeed teach me a whole new vocabulary.

No, you want the SNP to provide computers to help the poor. In other words you have already decided that there is value yet you cannot provide any evidence of this value.

I don’t feel the need to, we now have two people who think that the poor can not benefit from access to the internet, a 100 % increase.

The Incorrigible Plagiarist said...

Can you explain this project and it's benefits please?

I've looked it up and can only find that it was a project to provide 400 homes in Ferguslie and Moonpark with PCs and Broadband internet access.

Presumably those homes have all been provided - What were all the staff needed for?

Why should someone employed in such a short term project not expect the position to become redundant?

Presumably the PC's will still be in the homes, connected to the internet???? Given that the Libraries already provide free internet access and run computer training courses for free, I can't see the problem - am willing to listen to a sensible argument though. Can you quantify the issue in any way at all? (without describing it as a 'Shameful SNP attack on the weak and vulnerable' (c) Scottish Labour )

Cllr Terry Kelly said...

It’s been done already these people were doing well and their support has been taken away. Many of them will not, for various reasons go elsewhere and their hopes have been dashed. It was a terrible thing to do and suggesting that they fend for themselves after a year is no more than a cruel joke.

I don’t know anyone who uses computers who doesn’t need back up and most have it at their place of work, it’s an SNP scandal. These people who need more back up than most have just had that help made more difficult by the actions of the SNP.

The Incorrigible Plagiarist said...

Many of them will not, for various reasons go elsewhere and their hopes have been dashed.

Seriously, someone capable of using a PC can't go to the library? and doesn't have any alternative avenue of help?

Can you explain how the support was delivered? It just doesn't make any sense the way you're describing it.

Are you saying the people that have had a PC in the house for over a year with an internet connection, won't be able to fend for themselves??? It would seem to me that anyone in that situation has far more pressing needs that an internet connection.

You’ve got the wrong man, I’m a lifelong republican but not only in terms of Ireland.

Britain has treated the Irish very badly over the years and is guilty of causing the problems which still exist today.

Those problems are not unique to Ireland though, as a cursory glance around the world will show. British history is brutal and glorious by turns with the emphasis on brutality and the oppression of other peoples.

McGuiness and Paisley (the chuckle brothers) are now one of the best duos treading the boards today so why don’t you start with them ?
Do you not regard that as progress ?

So, that's a no then, you can't explain it.

Isn't it more likely that these people have far more pressing needs than "IT backup" ?

This will be remembered as a disgraceful episode for her and the SNP she did this with no regard to the truth, she did this with no regard for people’s health, she is a disgrace, a perfect example of the unsavoury and dishonest underbelly of nationalism.
